What makes Recovery Demystified different from AA or other programs?
We are non-religious, science-based, and peer-led. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all model. Instead, we empower people to create their own recovery path — whether that means total sobriety, harm reduction, or sober curiosity.
Is Recovery Demystified religious or spiritual?
No. We are intentionally non-religious and do not require spiritual practices or beliefs. Our approach is rooted in science, community, and self-determination.
What is harm reduction?
Harm reduction is an approach that focuses on safety and survival, not punishment. Instead of requiring total abstinence, we support people in making choices that reduce harm and improve health while respecting their autonomy.
What does “sober curious” mean?
“Sober curious” describes people who are exploring life without alcohol or other substances — whether for a season, an experiment, or a lifestyle. RD provides space for curiosity and connection without judgment.
Do I have to be totally sober to participate?
No. RD is open to people who are sober, sober-curious, or exploring harm reduction. We focus on meeting people where they are — survival first, then discovering what thriving looks like for them.
Who leads your groups and events?
Our groups and events are peer-led, facilitated by people with lived experience in recovery. We learn from one another and build strength through community.
What does “safer space” mean?
A safer space is a community environment built on respect, inclusion, and mutual understanding. We strive to make our spaces welcoming for LGBTQ+, BIPOC, disabled, unhoused, and working-class neighbors. If you need an accommodation, we invite you to let us know — we’ll always do our best to provide it.
How do I request disability accommodations?
You can request disability accommodations for any of our offerings by emailing info@recoverydemystified.com and letting us know what you need. It’s important to us that disabled folks can easily access and participate in everything we offer.
Can I bring a friend or ally to events?
Our support groups are for people exploring their relationship to alcohol or substances, and we do not allow students or outside observers. It’s okay to bring a support person if needed. Our Sober Social Events are open to anyone willing to remain substance-free for the duration.
Do I have to pay to participate?
No. Our services are barrier-free and open to all. We believe life-saving resources should never be behind a paywall. Donations are welcomed but never required.
Is Recovery Demystified confidential?
Yes. We respect the privacy of everyone who comes to our groups and events. What’s shared in our spaces stays in our spaces, and we ask all participants to honor that commitment. We want people to feel safe being open without fear of judgment or exposure.
Can I donate or support RD?
Yes. Everything we do is barrier-free, which means we rely on community support. Donations help cover costs for events, books, and resources so they remain open to everyone. We welcome contributions of any size.
Where do donations go?
Donations help keep our services barrier-free and open to all. They cover the cost of books, materials, meeting spaces, and community events, and they support our podcast and newsletter so resources stay accessible. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us create safer spaces for connection and healing.
How can I stay connected or find updates about RD?
You can stay connected by subscribing to our Substack newsletter, which comes out every Friday with event updates, new podcast episodes, and recovery resources. You can also follow us on Instagram for community updates and event reminders. Both are free and open to everyone — just like everything we do.
