Dry January Week Four…Snow Day!

Unfortunately, the library will be closed this weekend and we have to cancel this week’s Dry January Collaborative Learning.

It’s too bad, because this is my favorite week! Attached is the slideshow from Annie Grace’s book This Naked Mind on the topic of alcohol advertising. She was a marketer herself before becoming an author, and she explains all of the clever tricks that alcohol companies use to worm their way into our minds.

After the slideshow, I like to pull up some images of alcohol ads, and have the group discuss:

-What are they actually trying to sell us? It’s not ethanol, it’s acceptance. Fun. Friendship. Sex. Dreams of fancy vacations at the beach.

-What does a realistic alcohol ad look like? Hangovers, vomit, DUIs, anxiety, regret?

Unlearning addiction and reprogramming our brains starts with awareness, deconstructing our subconscious belief system, and regrowing new neural pathways based on making more informed choices. As Paul Churchill says, “We took the elevator down, we gotta take the stairs back up. We can do this!”

May you be happy and free, dear reader.
